# Authentication

> Authenticate every Falcon API request using a Bearer token.

All Falcon API requests require a valid Bearer token in the `Authorization` header. You obtain this token from your API key, which you generate in the Falcon dashboard.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Never expose your API token in client-side code, public repositories, or
> anywhere it could be accessed by others.

## Obtaining an API key

**1. Go to the Falcon dashboard**

Navigate to [https://api.polymarketanalytics.com](https://api.polymarketanalytics.com).

**2. Sign in**

Sign in using your email address.

**3. Navigate to API Keys**

Once logged in, go to the **API Keys** page.

**4. Copy your key**

Your API key is automatically generated and ready to use. Copy it from the dashboard to use as a Bearer token in your requests.

## Authentication method

Falcon uses the standard HTTP `Authorization` header with a Bearer token scheme. Include your token in every request:

```
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_TOKEN
```

## Authentication errors

If authentication fails, the API returns the following error:

| Status code | Meaning | Cause |
| - | - | - |
| `401` | Unauthorized | Missing or invalid token |

## Security best practices

To keep your API key secure:

* Store tokens in **environment variables** rather than hardcoding them.
* Never commit tokens to **version control**.
* Use **separate tokens for development and production** environments.
* Rotate tokens periodically to limit exposure if a key is compromised.
